What Is Smart Lipo?

Smart Lipo is a body contouring treatment that permanently destroys fat cells while also tightening and smoothing skin. It’s a more advanced version of the liposuction we all grew up hearing about, and it offers more refined results and a quicker recovery period. Sometimes referred to as Laser Lipo, this treatment relies on a tube known as a cannula, which is inserted through a small incision into targeted areas of fat. A laser tip on the cannula liquefies fat cells in the area, making them easy to remove. The laser’s heat also stimulates collagen production, leaving skin in the treatment zone smooth, firm, and youthful.

What Areas Can Be Treated?

This type of liposuction can be used to address fatty areas all over the body, including the abdomen, thighs, arms, back, and the flanks. Even parts of the body with lots of angles and tight curves, like the neck and face, can be treated effectively.

Is This Treatment Safe?

Rest assured that laser lipo is both effective and safe. This type of liposuction won approval from the FDA in 2006.

Does It Help With Cellulite?

Laser Lipo is primarily a fat removal treatment, although in some cases, it can help reduce the appearance of cellulite. Patients who have cellulite have dimpled skin that resembles an orange peel. Cellulite develops when fat starts to bunch up beneath the skin, putting pressure on the fibrous bands that connect the skin with underlying muscle. It’s unclear exactly what causes cellulite, but excess weight can play a contributing role, which is why Laser Lipo’s fat removal system can sometimes help.

How Much Fat Can Be Removed?

The amount of fat removed during a Laser Lipo treatment varies depending on factors including the patient’s size, body type, and the number of different areas being treated. Generally, no more than 5 liters of fat can be extracted from the body during a single Laser Lipo session.

Can This Be Combined With Other Treatments?

Depending on your cosmetic goals, Laser Lipo treatments can be combined with other services at our practice. We offer a complete line of med spa services, including Botox, spider vein treatments, chemical peels, Juvederm, and Kybella.

How Does It Differ From Traditional Liposuction?

Both traditional liposuction and Laser Lipo have the same goal of removing fat from the body, but they achieve that in different ways. Traditional liposuction relies heavily on the cannula to break up the fat and suction it out. Laser Lipo liquefies the fat, which is then siphoned easily out of the body.

Laser Lipo tends to be a gentler and less invasive treatment with a faster recovery time. Because the cannula used in Laser Lipo is much smaller, the treatment can be more precise and the results more refined. The skin tightening benefits associated with Laser Lipo are also something that traditional liposuction cannot offer.

How Long Does Smart Lipo Take?

The total length of treatment depends on how many different areas are being addressed and how big those areas are. In general, it takes about an hour for each area of the body to be treated. Most patients require just one treatment session, although a follow-up session for touch-ups can be scheduled if needed. The recovery period is usually minimal, with most patients needing a day or two of rest.

What Results Can I Expect?

One of the great things about Laser Lipo is that in addition to resolving problem areas, it also can be used to sculpt your body, giving you a toned and defined figure. This type of liposuction can get rid of fatty spots you’ve long struggled with while amplifying your existing curves. In some ways, it’s even better than traditional weight loss. Diets cause you to lose fat throughout the body. Laser Lipo takes fat just from where you want to get rid of it while leaving your curves intact. You’ll feel great about your body after undergoing a laser lipo treatment.

When Will I See the Results?

Some of the results of the treatment will be evident during the week after your appointment, and patients who have undergone this treatment often see their results continue to improve over the following six months. Unlike other body contouring treatments that freeze or manipulate fat to encourage it to break down, Laser Lipo removes a specific amount of fat directly from the body. That means you’ll see a difference immediately after Laser Lipo, and more fat will gradually be removed in the months that follow.

Will My Results Be Permanent?

Smart Lipo permanently kills off the fat cells the treatment takes aim at, but it will be up to you to maintain your new figure through diet, exercise, and other healthy lifestyle choices. If you are unable to maintain a healthy and consistent weight, you run the risk that fat could reappear in other areas.

What Other Benefits Are Associated With This Type of Liposuction?

Permanent results; a convenient treatment process; smoother, firmer, more youthful skin: there’s a lot to like about Laser Lipo. But here’s one other important benefit: You’ll feel great about yourself. Patients who have undergone this treatment say they feel a renewed sense of confidence and newfound comfort with their bodies. This is a treatment that allows patients to push away the problem fatty areas that they’ve been struggling with for years. Many find everyday activities to be easier and more enjoyable because there’s no more chaffing and tugging. Laser Lipo helps you put your best self forward.

Am I a Good Candidate?

The ideal candidate for this treatment is someone who is in relatively good shape but needs a little help with problem areas. Some patients are motivated to take action because the aging process is starting to creep up on them. Others turn to this treatment because diet and exercise haven’t been successful. Women of all skin types have successfully undergone this treatment, but there are a few signs that you may be an especially good candidate.

You’re in Good Health Overall

The best candidates are non-smokers who are in good physical health. We usually recommend that patients who are pregnant or breastfeeding postpone this treatment until a later date. Certain health conditions, including diabetes and coronary artery disease, may also disqualify a patient.

You’re Not Far Over Your Ideal Weight

Smart Lipo should not be viewed as a weight-loss treatment. Although you may lose a couple of pounds because of the fat that’s removed from your body, this treatment won’t significantly lower your weight. If weight loss is your primary goal, sticking to a more traditional diet and exercise plan, or in some cases, pursuing bariatric surgery, is the best course of action. This type of liposuction is ideal for patients who are less than 30 pounds overweight and who need a little help kicking some problem areas and tuning up their bodies.

Your Skin Is Fairly Elastic

Skin elasticity tends to decline with age, but patients who still have fairly elastic skin often enjoy great results with this treatment. Elasticity helps the skin contract and conform to the body’s new shape after treatment.

You Want Smoother, Firmer Skin

This treatment’s ability to smooth and tighten the skin in the treatment area, thanks to the heat from the laser, is a distinct side benefit that many patients find appealing. The smooth and tightened skin, combined with the fat removal, will give you a more youthful, revitalized look.

You Desire a Personalized Treatment

Laser Lipo treatments come in many forms. Some patients want a fairly significant overhaul involving treatment in multiple parts of the body. Other patients simply have a small but persistent problem area or two that they need a little help addressing. Although the technology and the guidelines are always the same, we can develop a customized treatment plan that specifically addresses the areas you want to focus on. Our practice is committed to working with you to achieve your goals.

You Have Realistic Expectations

Our patients are generally highly satisfied with their results, but this isn’t a treatment that will shave decades off your appearance. The ideal patient is realistic about the outcome and excited about the changes and improvements their body will undergo.

What Is the Treatment Process Like?

Patients interested in pursuing this treatment should call our office to schedule a consultation. During that appointment, we’ll review your medical history, including any previous surgeries and medications you are currently taking, and talk with you about your cosmetic goals. We’ll determine if Smart Lipo is an appropriate treatment option for you. Your treatment, once it’s scheduled, will be performed under local anesthesia. You may feel some pressure in the treatment area, but you’ll feel no discomfort.

Who Will Oversee My Treatment?

Your treatment will be overseen by Dr. Anne Hale. Dr. Hale worked in business before attending medical school. She attended Case Western Reserve University Medical School and did her residency at the University of New Mexico Medical Center. She is board certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology. She is a fellow of the American Congress of Obstetrics and Gynecology and a fellow of the American College of Surgeons.

What’s Recovery Like?

This type of liposuction is performed as an outpatient treatment, and we’ll send you home with specific instructions to follow during your recovery. Patients often rest for a couple of days and return to their jobs within a week. We often recommend that Laser Lipo patients wear a compression garment over the treatment area for a period of time after their appointment. This garment will be comfortably tight and will help your skin conform to the body’s new shape.
