Microdermabrasion is a simple, non-invasive skincare treatment that leaves the skin significantly softer and more youthful. It is also remarkably effective at lessening the appearance of facial wrinkles, scars, and discoloration.
What Is Microdermabrasion?
The goal of microdermabrasion is to remove the outermost layers of dead skin on the face, called the stratum corneum. The process involves using a small tool that combines a scrubbing brush with a gentle vacuum. The brush will come with a special abrasive surface and a mechanical scrubbing motion that can clean the face more deeply than by hand. The vacuum collects all the dead skin cells as they’re scrubbed off.
Many different microdermabrasion machines are available, including some for use at home, and they feature a wide variety of abrasive surfaces. Bristles are common in less expensive models for home use, but commercial units often feature crushed crystals or diamonds. Professional microdermabrasion can offer much more consistent results than home treatments because skincare professionals can select the exact abrasive surface and brush firmness for your skin type.
What Can I Expect from Treatment?
Treatments are relatively fast, usually taking less than an hour for the face. While the scrubbing is firm, the procedure is not uncomfortable, and in fact, many patients find it pleasant. The procedure is completely safe, with no significant side effects; however, the skin may be tender after the treatment, so users should apply lots of sunscreen and avoid applying chemical peels or other potential irritants for a few days afterward. Moisturizing creams or makeup can typically be applied immediately after a microdermabrasion treatment, and the procedure may make creams or serums more effective.
Results are not usually permanent since the skin cells will inevitably regrow, but the treatment can be repeated regularly. Each patient’s skin cells will regrow at a different rate, so the frequency of procedures should be determined by your dermatologist.
